For the last ten years, I have been an active leader in the community on a variety of issues ranging from growth in the county to creating an elected school board. I have an extensive background in history and political science– and I was fortunate enough to gain experience working in a number of government institutions. While I was working my way through school, I interned in the US House of Representatives and later I served as a legislative aide in the Maryland State Senate and the MD House of Delegates. I was elected to the Central Committee in 2002 for a four year term and currently serve as a member of the Rising Sun Board of Zoning Appeals. I have served as a member and officer of a number of local civic groups, partisan and non-partisan alike, so I am familiar with government from a local perspective as well as a federal and state one. I also have a background in the private sector as well, working with my family in various endeavors in the hotel and restaurant business so I have seen firsthand the crushing burden of over regulation and taxation.
I sincerely believe that we need to adopt a new path and end “business as usual” here in Cecil County. That is why I am offering a positive agenda to bring the county into the future. My common sense platform is “lower taxes, less government and more jobs.” This is more than just a sound bite or a catch phrase so allow me to explain what I mean:
Lower taxes…in the last year [FY 2011], the Commissioners did keep the tax rate at constant yield, but property taxes still continue to go up while property values go down.
I pledge to never vote to raise taxes on the citizens of Cecil County. We urgently need to reduce our local tax burden. The Commissioners need to work with the state delegation to repeal the sales tax increase in Annapolis and vote here at home to eliminate the “trash tax.”
Less government…we need to rein in the amount of government spending here in local government. For the last two years, I have been involved with Cecil Citizens Against Taxation and we have been actively involved in the budget process, looking through the department budgets line by line and I feel confident in saying that yes, it is possible to lower taxes and still maintain the basic level of services if we reduce local government waste. We must eliminate waste and also make sure that we efficiently spend the taxpayer dollars wisely especially in areas like education, where money should go into the classroom with teachers and students instead of creating new administrative positions.
And finally, more jobs…we need to balance residential growth here in Cecil County with commercial growth by building up our infrastructure along the Route 40/I-95 corridor. We should create a “business friendly” environment here with incentives for new businesses to relocate by reducing taxes and over regulation…in essence letting the free enterprise system work for itself.
In closing, we need fresh ideas on the Board of Commissioners. We need to hold our politicians accountable for their actions and turn over a new chapter in our local history.
I am grateful that the citizens supported our positive message in the election and I will work each and every day at the county building to best represent the citizens of Cecil County.
